President Arroyo inaugurates P700-M Domalandan bridge in Pangasinan

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will fly to Pangasinan on Saturday to inaugurate the newly-completed Domalandan bridge in Lingayen costing more than P700 million.

The bridge, a vital span between eastern and western Pangasinan across the Limahong channel that empties its water into the Lingayen Gulf, measures more than 600 meters and is one of the longest bridges in Pangasinan.

The new bridge replaced an old structure that was destroyed by a big flood in 1999 during the administration of former President Joseph Estrada.

However, construction of the new bridge started only in 2001 when President Arroyo took over with the funding coming from part of the yearly budget of the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Arroyo has to keep Garcillano happy, says Dagupan bishop

DAGUPAN CITY — Malacañang has created a “monster” in former election commissioner Virgilio Garcillano that it has no choice now but to support him in his congressional bid in Bukidnon province in next year’s elections, according to Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz.

“If Malacañang will not support him, he might spill the beans and the [political] opposition would feast on that possibility, which, to me, is a real possibility,” Cruz told the Inquirer Thursday.

House Speaker ’snubs’ Dagupan’s barangay night

DAGUPAN CITY — The annual Barangay Night, one of the city fiesta activities, held Wednesday evening at the city plaza was full of oddities.

Most conspicuous was the absence of Pangasinan Fourth District congressman and House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.

Also absent was beleaguered Liga ng mga Barangay (LB) president Eric Muñoz, chairman of Barangay Tambac. A seat that was allotted for Muñoz was given to a barangay councilman, who is his opponent in the barangay.

A Christmas Message

By Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz
Lingayen-Dagupan Archdiocese

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.” (John 1:5)

This is a signal truth forwarded by the gospel reading during this Christmas day. It is an inspiring reminder for us during these dark and still darkening times in our dear country. It is a strong message of hope in these days of much despair, poverty and misery among us as a people.

Christmas means many different things to many different persons. But one distinct significance of Christmas is always the same and true: the birth anniversary of Christ as the incarnate light that guides us in our continuing search for truth, insistent pursuit of justice and constant longing for peace.

Christmas wherefore calls for our sincere gratitude to God the Father for sending his own Son to be our everlasting light and guide in our day-to-day living. Now when our own country is in one big socio-moral darkness basically due to odious and ominous politics, the more we need Christ to light our path to hope, unity and solidarity.

Sad but true, we have to admit that in our country during these trying times, there is too much lying, stealing and cheating, too much graft and corruption, too much greed for power and wealth, too much abuse of human rights and killing of human lives. In short, there is too much darkness in our midst—even during this Christmas season.

PLDT VP hails MBSL as a leader in action

Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Company first vice president Richard N. Ferrer described Mayor Benjamin Lim as a leader in action for bringing worthwhile developments in Dagupan City.

In a speech delivered during a donation turnover ceremony on December 11 at the Gawad Kalinga-Bangusville housing project in Bonuan Gueset, Ferrer commended Mayor Lim “for being a leader driven to make a permanent change for his constituents.”

Ferrer, a bar topnotcher who studied at the University of Pangasinan, said that for several years under the leadership of traditional politicians, nothing happened in Dagupan. “But during the short term of Mayor Lim, we see progress in the city and has found a common direction,” he noted.

Ang Cha-cha ay Sumabit

This song was sang during the anti-chacha march and rally yesterday in Dagupan City.

ANG CHA-CHA AY SUMABIT
(Ang Pasko ay Sumapit)

I

Ang Cha-Cha ay sumabit,
Dahil Bayan ay nagalit
JDV Namilipit, Dahil Gusto
Ay Ipilit……

CON-ASS daw ang kailangan,
Lunas sa hirap ng bayan,
Ngunit siya ay nabisto
Hangad pala’y sariling pakinabang!!!

Refrain

Sa Congreso ay naghugas kamay,
Dahil ang CON-ASS nila’y sumablay
Sektor ng Bayan, Maging ang
Simbahan…Sa laban nagtagumpay!!!

II

Buong Bayan ay umawit
Pasalamat hanggang langit,
Dahil di naipilit
Hangad ng lider na ganid

Tunay na kalayaan,
Kapakanan ng ating bayan,
Ang laging ingatan,
Pang-aabuso’y, Laging babantayan…

Priests held large streamers that read, “Cha-cha [Charter change], Con-ass [constituent assembly], Concon [constitutional convention]: No! Not Now! Not under GMA [Arroyo]!”

Students who joined the rally sang “Ang Cha-cha ay Sumabit [Charter change has failed]” to the tune of the traditional Christmas carol, “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit [Christmas has come].”

They also chanted “Kay [In] JDV [Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.] at Gloria [Arroyo], wala kaming tiwala [we have no trust]!”
