Giant “Christ-mais Tree” erected in Pangasinan

San Jacinto, Pangasinan — A giant Christmas tree inspired by the town’s main agricultural product — corn — stands imposingly at the heart of the plaza here contributing to the season’s festive atmosphere.

Called Christ-mais (corn) tree, the symbol pays tribute to the bayanihan spirit of the townsfolk who painstakingly put up the tree as part of the Lady’s Choice Christmasterpiece ng Bayan, officials said.

More than a thousand lady’s choice bottles, corn husks, sasao-silag and other indigenous materials made up the tree which took 55 days to make.

Firecracker shop blast in Dagupan kills 1, hurts 4 others

DAGUPAN City — A man was killed while three others were injured after an explosion rocked a firecracker shop in Barangay Bacayao Norte here at 11:30 a.m. yesterday.

Supt. Mateo Casupang, deputy chief of police, said Melanio Orit, 29, died on the spot. Marivic Ricalde, 41; her son Joshua, 4; daughter Jasmine, 5-months-old, and Juanito Flores, the victim’s neighbor, were in critical condition at the Villaflor Hospital. Flores was released after treatment.

The house where the firecrackers are manufactured as well as three neighboring houses went up in flames.

Dagupan fiesta’s barangay night well attended

Barangay captains and officials in the city were feted to an evening of fun and entertainment during the well-attended Barangay Night held on December 27 at the City Plaza as part of the celebration of the 2006 Dagupan City Fiesta.

Taguig-Pateros congressman Alan Peter Cayetano, Mayor Benjamin Lim and fiesta hermana mayor councilor Maria Librada Reyna spearheaded the activity with the presence of some local executives, city councilors, department heads, special guests and the local media.

Among them were vice mayor Alvin Fernandez, councilors Teofilo Guadiz III, Joey Tamayo, Alex de Venecia, Vlad Mata, Michael Fernandez, Nick Aquino and Farah Decano.

In his speech, Cayetano expressed gratitude to Mayor Lim and Reyna for inviting him as the affair’s guest speaker.

Arroyo has to keep Garcillano happy, says Dagupan bishop

DAGUPAN CITY — Malacañang has created a “monster” in former election commissioner Virgilio Garcillano that it has no choice now but to support him in his congressional bid in Bukidnon province in next year’s elections, according to Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz.

“If Malacañang will not support him, he might spill the beans and the [political] opposition would feast on that possibility, which, to me, is a real possibility,” Cruz told the Inquirer Thursday.

Kin of 50 missing fishers in South China Sea remain hopeful

DAGUPAN CITY — Two weeks after several fishing boats sank amid huge waves in the South China Sea, relatives of missing fishermen from at least six coastal towns of Pangasinan and Zambales have not given up hope their loved ones would return home alive.

Mayor Ruperto Martinez of Infanta, Pangasinan, where most of the fishermen came from, said residents in the town remained hopeful their missing relatives “are just out there, somewhere, waiting to be sent home.”

Dagupan ventures into urban veggie production

An urban vegetable production seminar was held at barangay Herrero-Perez as part of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and zero-waste programs of the city government.

The city government encourages the establishment of nursery gardens in the barangays where the composted materials can be used.

“This program is part of our undertaking to really lessen the volume of wastes being thrown on the dumpsite,” Mayor Benjamin S. Lim said in his message.

The mayor stressed that the city government is really serious in putting order in the disposal of wastes in the city.

House Speaker ’snubs’ Dagupan’s barangay night

DAGUPAN CITY — The annual Barangay Night, one of the city fiesta activities, held Wednesday evening at the city plaza was full of oddities.

Most conspicuous was the absence of Pangasinan Fourth District congressman and House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.

Also absent was beleaguered Liga ng mga Barangay (LB) president Eric Muñoz, chairman of Barangay Tambac. A seat that was allotted for Muñoz was given to a barangay councilman, who is his opponent in the barangay.

Pangasinenses hail passage of Children’s Code

The Children’s Code was identified as the most significant piece of legislation passed by the provincial board of Pangasinan this year, according to Vice Governor Oscar Lambino.

Lambino, who personally authored the provincial ordinance along with Provincial Board Member Marlyn Primicias Agabas, said the legislation recognizes the rights of children who are the hope of the future.

Tsunami scare empties Northern Luzon coastal towns

DAGUPAN CITY — A report that a meter-high (3.3 feet) tsunami will hit the northern Philippines after a strong earthquake hit Taiwan on Tuesday night sent villagers in coastal towns of Pangasinan, Cagayan and Batanes fleeing to higher ground, officials in these provinces said Wednesday.

In Pangasinan, Fred Castelo, chairman of the municipal disaster coordinating council of Bolinao town, said the council was immediately mobilized as residents were already panicking after they heard radio and television reports warning of the possibility that a tsunami would hit Basco, Batanes.

Guard, laundry boy tagged in Dagupan hotel killings

DAGUPAN CITY — Police were set to file charges of robbery with multiple murder and frustrated murder against two arrested suspects in the killing of three hotel employees and the wounding of another here at dawn of Dec. 24.

Superintendent Edgar Basbas, city police chief, and Superintendent Manuel Velasco, provincial chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), presented suspects Victor Dalisay and Junjun Romero, security guard and laundry boy, respectively, of the Floren Hotel, to the media yesterday. A manhunt is ongoing for a third suspect.
